Description
Chacchoben Mayan Ruins are situated in Costa Maya, roughly 1 hour drive from Mahahual (about 46 miles/75 kilometers from Mahahual, 52 miles/85 kilometers from Chetumal city, 110 miles/177 kilometers south of Tulum).
Chacchoben is the Mayan word meaning "red corn" (in spanish "mais colorado") and it's located in an area known as the "Region of the Lakes" due to the number of lagoons and areas with low terrains that are permanently humid or flooded during the rainy season.
This mostly restored temple pyramids take on a mystical atmosphere surrounded by a secluded lush jungle; you can see different sorts of plants as mahogany trees, enormous cohune palms, strangler figs and the hanging tentacles of banyan trees. Also you can observe endemic birds and plenty of mammals.
The first human settlements in the area of Chacchoben, have been dated as early as 200 BC and is believed that most of the structures restored were built around the year 360 AD and were modified up to five times. The architecture and some pieces of ceramic found in the area suggest that the main function of the buildings had civic and religious meaning, the ceremonial center of the site covers an area of nearly 6 square kilometers.
The buildings of Chacchoben are unavailable for climbing, the main reasons is because they are dangerous and above all to preserve the ruins.
Chacchoben has a restaurant and a shopping area.
