Bearing witness to more than 2500 years of history, the region that is now known as the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve was colonized by the Maya in pre-Hispanic times. It was than called Asencion and Espiritu Santu Bays by the Spanish conquerors, and is now the center of the most advanced conservation and sustinable development programs.

Cougar Sian Ka'an
In the Mayan Language, Sian Ka'an means "Origin of the Sky". It's a group of ecosystems that include vast white sandy beaches, semi-evergreen forest, freshwater and saltwater marshes, mangroves and a large marine section with a coral reef.

Sian Ka'an's jungle is still home to the animal that Mayan people venerate the most; the Jaguar. More than 800 plant species have been identified in this reserve and some of the most outstandings ones are the Chechen, the chicozapote and the Chit Plams.
Its rich and varied fauna includes five of the six species of felines that exist in Mexico, among them the jaguar, and the cougar or Puma. There area is also home to other mammals, like the white-tailed deer and the red brocket deer.

Leatherback Turtle
Among the more than 300 bird species, one can find the toucan, the green parrot and the white-fronted parrot, the ocellated turkey and the great curassow, as well as numerous aquatic species, like the wood stork.

Sian Ka'an has a diversity of reptiles, such as the marsh crocodile, and the river crocodile, as well a several marne turtles, such as the loggerhead, the hawksbill, the green sea turtle and the rare leatherback turtle.
