Oxtankah
Oxtankah is situated only 7 kilometers north of Calderitas. It''s name signifies "Between the Ramon Trees".
Some people believe that this village was where the first mestizos were born, son of the mayan princess Zazil Ha and Gonzalo Guerrero (the mayn princess and the spaniard who shipwrecked off the nearby Caribbean waters).
The Maya built this city which includes small temples, palaces, plazas, sunken patios and scattered edifications only aproximately 1.000 meters from the bay line. They built wells and cisterns to enjoy sweet water from rain collection.
The small city later extended toard the bay line and across the channel to the island of Tamalcab, where a few archaelogical constructions have been discovered as well. The architectural stye has been linked to that of the petén in Guatemala. The size and importance of these ruins did not equal that of the Petén, as many of them were abandoned around 600 AD.
They were later re-occupied and re-modified with new temples, palaces and administrative buildings built over the then existing platforms. After the first spanish incursions a small chapel was built on the north end. A testament to the latest constructions built in Oxtankah.
