Costa Maya is separate from Belize by the river Boca Bacalar Chico and it's located about 100 km from Chetumal, the Quintana Roo's capital.
It includes the MPA Xcalak Reef National Park, the Manati Sanctuary, and represents an influence area to Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve.
The Costa Maya also includes two small fishermen villages - Mahahual and Xcalak
Avoid the crowded hotel zone of Cancun and let yours be the only footprints you see as you walk along the miles of secluded Costa Maya beach front.
One of México's best kept secrets, the area is a fascinating mix of jungles, lagoons, wetlands, coral reefs and pristine coastline.
Costa Maya has several ecosystems such as reef, mangrove and low rainforest along 97 km of coastal zone, with less than 2% of the surface modified. It is considered as a pristine and well conserved reef area in Mesoamerica.
Currently, not only fishing activities take place in this area but also tourism does.
The area has been growing quickly and rapidly after year 2002 construction of a big cruise ship port in Mahahual, which has already received more than 1 million tourists so far; despite this Costa Maya is generally undeveloped and nature is the uncontested owner.
Due to the tourist development, Costa Maya has a strong focus on environmental protection. All over the coastal area and specially to south of Mahahual, small Hotels and Resort are rising in the highest respect for nature and wildlife.
Costa Maya main town is Mahahual, a small fishermen village that slowly is transforming for welcoming tourism. It's the Mexico's 2nd most popular cruise ship destination and when cruises arrive the sleepy fishing village comes to life. The main "boulevard" of Mahahual is a concrete sidewalk that runs between a pretty white beach and some shops, beach bars and restaurants.
For romantic walks on the beach or relaxation away for crowds you can chose one of the beautiful beaches locaded very near to Mahahaual. There are some small Hotels and Beach Resort built in the highest respect for nature and wildlife, you can find it specially in the south of Mahahual.
